In the classroom…
The dust is settling from this years Easter break and its now time for us to do the first of five ASI Level 1 Surf Instructor courses this year. We have five young surfers on our current course and they are keen and willing to make sure that our next batch of surf coach’s is going to be straight out of the top drawer. This group is mainly from the local area but one guy has made it all the way from Scotland. One day I suspect these courses will be able to be taken over the Internet but for now it can be a real sacrifice for some people. Good on them and the very best of luck.
In the shop…
Meanwhile over in the boutique new clobber is arriving every day and today it was the postman’s pleasure to bring us our brand new posters and gift vouchers. The gift vouchers are available for any amount and can be bought online or through the store. They make a great gift for any surfer who is hoping to improve their surfing with a few surfing lessons this summer but they can also exchanged for surf hire and anything in the shop.
One of the other things to arrive this week are the brand-new Robie Pro Max changing robe. These little beauties are fully waterproof, windproof and will have you dry in no time at all. Better than that the whole concept was created by a local St Ives based company. So not just a pretty harbour but a hive of industry and creativity also.
In the surf…
It’s looking like the weather is set to continue for a week at least. Plus we have been blessed with amazing surf this month so far and it looks like it’s going to continue for a week at well.
Fingers crossed eh?
We’re Open – Summer Starts Now!
Another winter draws to a close, spring is here and the surf academy is once again open for the summer season. Our coaches are back from their winter sojourns to sub-tropical paradises and are refreshed, recharged and ready to start the 2015 summer surfing season off with a bang.
The shop has been painted, we are buried in new stock from Quiksilver, Gul, Torq surfboards and Ocean & Earth and a new floor has been laid – it’s nice and soft underfoot and has been getting rave reviews from the first of our customers! We also have some lovely new neighbours in the Rockpool Seafood Cafe providing piping hot coffee and delicious seafood & burgers for any surfers passing through.
In short life is good.
We will be open every day from 10am to 6pm from now until the end of October so if you want some surfing lessons in beautiful St Ives Bay, surf hire or a nice new wetsuit then pop in and we can fix you up.
And if you can’t get here but know someone who is coming to Cornwall why not treat them to a surfing gift voucher. They are redeemable against surfing lessons, hire and anything in the shop. Check out our Gift Vouchers here.
What do surf coaches do in the off season?
It’s a question that gets asked a lot during the summer. While we do work very hard during the summer the surroundings and work environment are an excellent compensation – not many people can say they work at the beach. Or go barefoot to work for that matter.
So what do we do in the winter? Most of our surf coaches use surf coaching to fund their winter travels. As good as Cornwall can be in the winter – and winter is the time when we get some of our best surf – it does get cold and even when the surf is pumping the thought of putting on a wetsuit that you left to dry in the rain or festering in a bucket in the back of the van is enough to make you run to the travel agents.
This winter Poppy is in Australia doing some coaching on the Gold Coast, Freddie is in Bali surfing in 29° water and Callum has gone to Nicaragua taking photos at Thunderbomb Surf Camp. Even I managed to snag a quick trip away to an Indonesian island with ridiculously good surf.
If you think you might like to spend the summer at the beach and your winter…uh….. on another beach then you might want to consider becoming a surf coach.
We have lots of ASI Level 1 Surf Coach courses coming up over the next year starting in March so where will you spend your winter?

Our Surfing Courses
[themedy_accordion][themedy_toggle accordion=”1″ icon=”ok” heading=”Splash Surfing Lesson (1st Surfing Lesson) – £30″ onload=”open”]So you’re thinking of taking the plunge and booking your first lesson. Well done! This is the first step to being a surfer – you’ll never look back. During your first splash you can expect to learn about the surfing environment and how to control your surfboard safely. We’ll teach you how to paddle the surfboard, catch waves and the different techniques of standing up. You can also expect to learn a little about surf etiquette and which waves are most suitable for you to surf on.[/themedy_toggle][themedy_toggle accordion=”2″ icon=”ok” heading=”Trimmer Surfing Course (Two Surfing Lessons) – £55″ onload=”closed”]So you’ve had your first lesson, caught your first few waves and you’re hooked. Now it’s time to improve your wave selection, work on your paddling technique and ‘trim’ – that’s controlling your speed on the wave by re-postioning yourself relative to the surfboard and laying down your first turns. You’re still in the whitewater but those green waves further out don’t look quite so daunting anymore.[/themedy_toggle][themedy_toggle accordion=”3″ icon=”ok” heading=”Carver Surfing Course (Three Surfing Lessons) – £75″ onload=”closed”]OK, so you’ve done some little turns. Now its time to really bust out the moves. Up to now you’ve been in waist depth water but it’s time to go a little deeper so you can have loads of space to really carve it up. After three lessons you should be linking turns together and, surf permitting, catching your first ‘clean and green’ waves.[/themedy_toggle][themedy_toggle accordion=”4″ icon=”ok” heading=”Hotdogger Surfing Course (Four Surfing Lessons) – £90″ onload=”closed”]
So you’ve tamed the whitewater. Are you ready for some advanced skills? With the HotDogger you’ll be learning how to get your surfboard through the soup and out into deeper water. This is proper surfing!
Catching unbroken waves can be frustrating but with our tips on positioning yourself in the line-up, understanding which waves to catch and cutting across the wave face you’ll be beaming from ear to ear. You’re going to need to know a bit more about surf etiquette and lining up with the other surfers but hey, that’s what we’re here for.
[/themedy_toggle][themedy_toggle accordion=”5″ icon=”ok” heading=”Intensive HotDogger (4 lesson surfing course taken over two days) – £85″ onload=”closed”]Do you know what ‘spaghetti arms’ are? You will at the end of this course! This is the normal HotDogger course taken as two lessons a day for two days.[/themedy_toggle][themedy_toggle accordion=”6″ icon=”ok” heading=”Freerider (5 lesson surfing course) – £105″ onload=”closed”]Time to bring those carving skills that you learnt in the whitewater and apply them to the unbroken waves. Learn the theory of laying down your first bottom turn and put it into practise.[/themedy_toggle][themedy_toggle accordion=”7″ icon=”ok” heading=”Hellman (10 lesson surfing course) – £175″ onload=”closed”]
Think you’ve got what it takes to do 10 surfing lessons?
By now you’re catching unbroken waves and cutting across them consistently. Things are looking good.
But surfing isn’t all about posing. It’s probably about 90% of it but if you want to look really cool you’ve got to be going a little bit faster and adding some pizzazz to your moves.
The surfing instructors at Gwithian Academy of Surfing can show you how.

What Our Customers Say
Just wanted to say a big thank you to you all. My son Elliot has had a fantastic time – you have taken him from complete beginner to up and riding most waves in a week – the lesson package was super value and the loan of more advanced boards to practice on made this a great deal. – Brian Hughes
