For the last couple of years we have been running our Junior Surf Club right through the winter and I have been amazed by how lucky we have been with the surf. I would have expected to have to cancel or postpone at least a quarter of the surfing lessons that are done outside of the summer season but I couldn’t have been more wrong.
Looking back through the diary it seems that we only cancelled 6 of the junior surfing lessons in the last two years – summer or winter – and all due to high winds and large surf. This year I’ve lost count of the times that it’s been horrible weather throughout the week but when Saturday comes the wind seems to ease or swing offshore while the surf drops to a more manageable size between waist and head-high.
Today was another cracker of a day. The surf had been shocking all week at Gwithian but a new swell started to show late on Thursday and by the time the younguns were getting into their wetsuits today the surf was absolutely smoking. Dan put them through their paces in the water while Ian got a little bit of footage of them for them to review afterwards and the kids hard work is beginning to show with some impressive performances in the waves.
If this run of great surf continues into the summer we could have some rippers on our hands.
Junior Surf Club is on every Saturday morning at 10:30am and only costs £6 per child. Ring 01736 757579 for more information.
