They divide the critics but when you grab a SUP and have a paddle at sunset it’s easy to see why it’s the fastest growing sport in the world.

May Bank Holiday & Half Term Opening Times
Spring is nearly behind us and we are surely heading into another, ahem, Barbeque summer at the surf school. Just writing it has almost certainly put a jinx on it but ho, we are tremendously happy here whatever the weather.
The surf has been cracking for the last couple of weeks so lets hope this good run will continue. Not that we have been surfing anywhere near as much as usual – our time has been spent fruitfully getting the surf school ready for a manic period of surfing lessons in Gwithian during the Bank Holidays and Half Term holidays. A lick of paint here, new doors there and a new tarmac drive. The surf school is looking good and, thankfully, ready for Half Term.
The surf school will be open every day from 10am to 6pm for surfing lessons, surf hire and SUP lessons. Even if you just need a bar of wax or just want to pop in for a chat then come on over. We might even put the kettle on.
Stand Up Paddle (SUP) Boarding Lessons Now Available
We have offered SUP hire for a number of years but now we are pleased to say that we will be offering SUP lessons through the surf academy this summer. The sport is super popular in flat water and on the South coast but we reckon that Gwithian is a perfect venue for trying SUP on the North coast. Gwithian’s slow moving waves are ideal for giving SUP a go and if the surf is too big here it’s easy to move down St Ives Bay to the more sheltered beaches at Hayle.
SUP is one of the fastest growing sports in the world that has more than doubled in popularity each year since it began to take off in 2005. It’s easy to see why. SUP is a traditional Hawaiian way of surfing where you are constantly standing while using a long paddle to propel yourself either in flat water or onto breaking waves. It’s a fantastic way to stay fit and is the most accessible form of surfing there is. Even if the sea is flat then you can still get out on one of our SUP boards and Cornwall is one of the best locations to give it a try. You can SUP in the sea, rivers, estuaries and even the Tamar – literally anywhere there is water more than six inches deep.
If you fancy getting in the water on a SUP board this summer then give us a bell on 01736 757579 or book online.

Train to be a Surf Instructor
So what will you be doing to earn enough money for a surf trip away this winter?
What if I said you could earn your money right on the beach while getting a tan and talking about surfing all day? Becoming a surf instructor is relatively straight forward for someone who is motivated, has a decent standard of surfing ability and good at communicating. It’s also one of the most enjoyable jobs there is.
