Sporting Summer

It’s been a wonderful summer of sport so far. It seems like every time I switch on the telly there is some amazing sporting event taking place. If you witnessed the 4th set of the Wimbledon mens final, the Dutch dismantling the World Champions Spain at the World Cup or the start of the Tour de France you’ll know what I mean. Watching sportsmen and women in the peak of physical condition pushing their bodies to the limits is enough to give you goosebumps at times.

And if you want to see some of the worlds best surfers in action then you’re in for a treat. The J-Bay Open is on in a couple of days at Jeffreys Bay, South Africa and because there is a very small time difference combined with the flawless perfection of the surf this is a great event for British surfers to watch via the ASP webcast.

We will be showing it in the shop if you happen to be passing but if not, seriously, watch the webcast. It’s gonna be epic.

New Redback Surfboards Back In

After a week of small but perfectly formed surf and relentless sunshine how do we celebrate? BBQ on the beach with a few well earned beers? Sat on the sofa watching the World Cup with a few well earned beers? Drinking well earned beers alone in the dark?

Nope to all three. This week surf school manager Ian and the work experience lad Josh celebrated by unpacking 50 new Redback surfboards, attaching 150 fins (three in each) and flat-packing two van loads of cardboard. And was it worth it?

Oh, yes. I’ve waxed lyrical about these surfboards before but I’m still as impressed with them as I was last year. They take an incredible amount of punishment, they surf similar to a regular fibreglass surfboard and are great for novices and more experienced surfers alike.

We will be using the vast majority of them for surf hire and surfing lessons but we do have a few spare ones for people to buy if they are in the market for a great beginner surfboard.

After a hectic half term period everything has calmed down again as we approach what I have always regarded as my favourite time of year. June is fantastic at Gwithian; the beach is empty, the weather is (usually) good and the water temperature is increasing by the day.At the surf school we have been beginning preparations for the first of the school groups that start next week which means getting a heap of new ID vests screenprinted, improving our hire fleet with a new delivery of Redback softboards and restocking in general.
