But I thought it began ages ago!
Well, yes and no. While the waves and weather have been absolutely bonkers for the last month the water has still been relatively mild so I never really feel that winter truly begins until January. Certainly the hard months are coming up and the sea is at it’s coldest in March so the easy part of the winter surfing season is drawing to a close.
Just because the water’s getting cold doesn’t mean that you can’t still get in the surf however. The beauty of surfing in the St Ives area of Cornwall is the ubiquity of sheltered coves where you can get good rideable waves when the more exposed beaches are being hammered by swell.
Last week while the county was being brought to it’s knees by high winds, power cuts and the wrong kind of snow a lucky few of us were surfing one of my favourite winter surf spots just down the beach. Tucked up under the cliffs and sheltered from the winds the perfectly groomed waves were being ridden by hardy surfers in the know.
Sure, getting into a wet wetsuit in a windy car park is no ones idea of fun but if you are keen there is loads of fun to be had in Cornwall’s winter surf.
