About Gwithian Academy of Surfing
It’s hard to believe but back in 1999, there were no surf schools in Gwithian and only two in the whole of West Cornwall. Gwithian Academy of Surfing was formed by Tyson Greenaway and Trevor Clayton in the June of that year and has gone on to become one of the countries most established surf schools and won a reputation for providing quality surfing tuition for all ages and abilities.
Back in ’99, the surf school was run from the back of a trailer on the cliffs by the Gwithian Beach lifeguard hut. The surf school traded here for 6 years before moving to the beautiful beachside location in the grounds of the Rockpool Bar complex that Gwithian Academy of Surfing now runs from.
We were sad to see the old trailer go but when we realised that we could offer changing facilities, a bespoke teaching room and outside shower as well as our surf shop we got over it pretty quickly!
At our surf school, we have worked with all sorts of surfers ranging from beginners on their first lesson right up to elite performance analysis of the British Junior Surfing Squad. We even teach people how to become surf instructors and run at least three ASI Level 1 Surf Instructor Courses every year.
