The cutback should be in every surfers repertoire and when done correctly it’s the most functional move there is. If your wave goes slack, you need to get back to the pocket so you’ve gotta either do a cutback or kick out.
Check out this video of Brazilian pro surfer Jadson Andre.

He’s done a decent cutback on a really slack section and to do that his technique had to be spot on. Watch the video again and see how compressed his body is as he drives through the manoeuvre (26 seconds).
If you can maintain a low centre of gravity like Jadson does then you improve your chances of bringing the board right around for a high rebound off the whitewater. If you hit the whitewater at the highest point then you will maintain your speed for the next manoeuvre. If the hit the whitewater at a lower point then you will probably lose all your speed.
Try to brush the wave face with your leading hand like Jadson (28 seconds) and hold this position for a second or two next time you do a cutback. This should make you compress your body and help you start to do a figure-of-eight style roundhouse cutbacks by making you turn harder and for a longer period of time.
Try this out and let us know how you get on.
